What is BPPV?
![]() |
Small crystals exist normally in one of the balance portions of the inner ear. These crystals can become dislodged and float into the wrong canal. The motions that most often cause dizziness are looking up, looking down, lying down, sitting up from lying down, but especially rolling onto one's side placing the affected ear downward in bed (lying on your side or turning your head). Symptoms usually last fewer than 6 weeks.
Causes of BPPV
The cause of loosening of the crystals in BPPV is unknown. Head injuries certainly may cause BPPV. In later life, the cause may be degeneration of the vestibular system in the inner ear.
Treatments and Goggle Relief
Special exercises, physical therapy, surgery, and waiting for the condition to naturally subside are common treatments. The most effective treatment, however, has proven to be the canalith repositioning procedure (CRP) pioneered by Dr. John Epley. The canalith repositioning maneuver is a series of head positions that cause the loosened crystals to fall out of the posterior semicircular canal into a less sensitive part of the inner ear where they may be absorbed more rapidly. The VertiGONE Goggle gives you a visual path to follow to accomplish this angle critical head maneuver.
